Arrangement has been concluded by the Niger State Government to provide basic education and skill acquisition that will improve the lives of the inmates of Minna Prisons when they leave the prison yard.
The commissioner for Education, Alhaji Danladi Abdulhammeed, stated this on Monday while speaking with journalists after an advocacy visit to the two prison facilities in the city.
Abdulhameed said that government was determined to ensure that inmates have access to education order to make them better citizens when back to the society.
The commissioner said that he was impressed that the Life Rehab Programme of the state Governor’s wife, Hajia Jumai Babangida Aliyu, had positively impacted on many inmates, especially in areas of literacy programmes and computer training.
“We believe that with education, their character can be remoulded and that they are entitled to education irrespective of their character,” he said.
Abdulhameed said that government was ready to provide sporting and ICT facilities in the prisons for the use of the prisoners and to keep them fit at all times.
The state Comptroller of Prison, Musa Mayaki, who conducted the commissioner round the prisons, explained that at the Medium Prison in Minna, there are 292 inmates out of which 69 were convicts.
Mayaki said that 217 were also awaiting trial while 12 others were in the condemned cell and 79 on culpable homicide charges.
He stated that the old prison in Minna was holding 296 inmates out of which 65 have been convicted while 280 others were on awaiting list.
