The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa has thrown its weight behind the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg, saying the consulate has been working “tirelessly for the promotion of peace and the security of lives and property of Nigerians in South Africa”.
NICASA in a statement issued and signed by its President General, Ben Okoli, and Secretary General, Dr. Great Nnadi, denied in totality a statement credited to the President of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, Adetola Olubajo, alleging the consulate’s inability to secure the prosecution of culprits in the killings in South Africa of over 127 Nigerians from January 2016 to date.
NICASA in its statement said: “This allegation by Mr Olubajo is not only untrue but aimed at causing disharmony between Nigerians and their South African hosts especially the Police.
“We at NICASA disassociate ourselves from this obvious campaign of calumny and game of frustration aimed at our Consular General and the staff of the Consulate who have been working hard tirelessly for the promotion of peace and the security of lives and properties of Nigerians living in South Africa.
“We come against all attempt to incite fresh xenophobic or other attacks by South Africans against Nigerians. We encourage all effort that is aimed at bringing peace and end to all violent tendencies that can continue to affect our harmonious coexistence with our host country.
“The laws of South Africa must apply and should be allowed to take their course on all litigations wether with Nigerians and all other nationalities. Our people are encouraged to engage themselves in more respectable and more meaningful sources of living to stem the tide of hate associated with underhand and unscrupulous businesses.
“We remain committed to peace and unity amongst Nigerians and South Africans.
Let us therefore desist from making inflammatory and incendiary statements that are capable of disrupting the peaceful atmosphere among Nigerians and their South African hosts
“We regret with profound grief the death of another Nigerian, who was stabbed to death yesterday by another Nigerian brother in the west rand. It is one death too many and calls for introspection among us to check this rising ugly tide. We shall reach out to all formations and units of Nigerians in South Africa aimed at finding a lasting solution to this menace.”
