Communities located on the border between Nigeria and Cameroon in Cross River State area have no cause to fear that their land will be ceded to another country, Governor Liyel Imoke, said.
Imoke gave the assurance in Danare I, Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State when he visited the area on Wednesday to inspect the ongoing Bashua-Abonorole Danara Rural Access Mobility Project.
He urged the villagers to go about their legitimate businesses without fear because the government was determined to make life comfortable for rural dwellers.
The governor’s advice followed reports from the community alleging that their Cameroonian neighbours had erected beacon Pillar 113 far into their land for the purposes of annexing it.
He said that the state government through its boundary commission would transform the border and rural communities as part of its commitment to take government to those who needed it most.
He also advised the community to stop illegal logging in their area to encourage control of ecological hazards.
Earlier, the Village Head of Danare I, Oyu Joshua Mbia Bokop, welcomed Imoke and said he was the first governor to visit the area.
He also told the governor that the community had expressed the fear that the Cameroonian Government had started to annex the area.
The governor, who has been on a three-day working visit to the northern and central districts, also inspected RAMP roads at Nta Nselle Ayaghasa-Oyenge (Ikom), Okpeche-Ochagbe-Ikpariko-Abuochiche (Obudu) and Ochon-Okokori- Ekuri Onai (Obubra-Akamkpa).
The roads, which traverse virgin forests, are meant to create access to rural communities and link them to urban centres.
