NDLEA arrests a Burudian woman with heroin at Lagos airport
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Thursday arrested a 38-year-old Burudian woman with 2.39 kg of heroin at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, on arrival from Tanzania.
The NDLEA spokesman, Mitchell Ofoyeju, made this known via a statement in Lagos.
The statement said that the drug was concealed in the suspect’s luggage.
Ofoyeju said: “A Burundian, Uwimana Aisha, had in her hand luggage two parcels of powdery substance, weighing 2.39 kg, which tested positive for heroin.
“The suspect, in her statement, claimed the bag was given to her by her Nigerian boyfriend in Tanzania.
“He promised to marry me and take care of my only daughter; we were to come to Nigeria together but he later said that he would join me the following day.
“I trusted him because he was nice to me.”
The statement said that the case was under investigation.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, said that the agency was determined to step up its counter-narcotics operations through effective collaboration.
Giade underscored the need for such collaboration while receiving two Swiss investigators.
He said: “The global counter-narcotics campaign demands both local and international partnership.
“Nigeria’s drugs control scorecard today is enviable due to our determination to partner with other stakeholders.
“The sophistication of drug trafficking cartels demands that nations should join forces against transnational crimes like drug trafficking, money laundering and human trafficking.
“Such collaboration enhances exchange of intelligence, capacity building and use of improved technology in crime control.
“No fewer than 20 NDLEA officers have gone to Switzerland under this cooperation.
“We hope to partner with other countries and further enhance our drugs control capacity.”
