The National Consultative Front NC Front has condemned successive governments and political rulers of Nigeria for their conspiracy against the constitutional aspirations of Nigerian citizens for a just, united and stable country. The Front initiated to save Nigeria’s floundering democracy also frowned at the misplaced preference of the ruling powers for continuous circle of elections into political offices instead of first forging political consensus for the country
Reacting to the worrisome state of the country and low turnout of voters during the Local Government elections in Lagos and Ogun states, the National Scribe of the NCFront, Sir Olawale Okunniyi, lamented that continuous circle of elections in the country without popular constitutional consensus of the diverse peoples of Nigeria, which is vital for Nigeria’s progress and prosperity, is a clear exercise in futility and a time bomb for the corporate existence of Nigeria that must be urgently detonated by Nigerians before it is too late
Okunniyi said it is for that reason that leaders of conscience under the auspices of the NCFront have set up a 60 Member Constitutional Dialogue Advisory Committee, being led by Olisa Agbakoba SAN, Dr Usman Bugaje, Dr Tokunbo Awolowo Dosunmu, Chief Mike Ozekhome and Dr Hakeem Baba Ahmed, who heads the Conference Secretariat to facilitate a pan Nigerian political dialogue and negotiations to birth an agreed people’s constitution for Nigeria through the process of constituents’ assembly and referendum, “an intervention very much expected to stem the tide of tribal and religious conflicts as well as growing insecurity, anarchy and tension in Nigeria,” NCFront asserted
Okunniyi, a prominent advocate of popular democracy and sovereign powers of the citizens again took a swipe at successive governments for lip service and cosmetic step toward national reconciliation and unity. He stressed that national dialogue and consultations in Nigeria have largely been used by successive regimes as jobs for the boys to settle political supporters and proteges instead of using them to explore genuine national integration and cohesion for the peace and unity of the diverse peoples of Nigeria
He hinted that “NCFront has however decided to rally all well meaning Nigerians and political gladiators across political divide and party lines to put a stop to the dangerous circle of “elections to perdition” foisted by a powerful cartel of the Nigerian political class, who have taken liberty to run rough shod on the peoples of Nigeria having taken away the sovereign power of Nigerians over the country and the constitution and handed it over to their agents and proteges in the National Assembly through section 8 and 9 of the 1999 military imposed constitution, which erroneously ceded the sovereign power over the Nigerian constitution to the National assembly
The NCFront however warned that the country may never attain the required unity and stability, if the National Assembly does not quickly invoke its powers under section 4 of the 1999 military constitution to make law for the good governance of the country to enact a law that will allow Nigerians through a democratic Constituents’ Assembly to engage in genuine political dialogue and negotiations in fashioning a generally acceptable people’s constitution for Nigeria that can bring about the stability and good governance and prosperity of Nigeria as provided in the constitution.
Consequently, as concerned stakeholders of project Nigeria, we have elected to initiate the process of building a major political alliance and coalition of prominent political Stakeholders across political affiliations and party divide beginning from Tuesday, 27th July, 2021 to rescue and save Nigeria from from failed political rulers and worthless elections circles that have been seriously dotted by apathy and electoral malpractices.
