NAVC tasks members on transparency in anti-graft campaign at grassroots

The National Anti-Corruption Volunteer Corps on Saturday appealed to its members to be transparent in their fight against corruption, particularly at the grassroots.
Mohammed Abdullahi, the Kwara Coordinator, of the corps made the appeal in Ilorin while inaugurating new executive members for Ilorin East local government area of the state.
Abdullahi said that the corps, an affiliate of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission would do everything within its guidelines to ensure a corrupt free society.
The coordinator, who lamented that corruption had eaten deep into Nigerian society, advised members to give maximum cooperation to curb the menace at the local level.
He said: “If we say we should start from the top, honestly we are not going to get it right. So we have to start from the grassroots and that is why we are inaugurating the campaign at local government level.”
He, however, identified financial challenge as one of the impediments to the operation of the corps in Nigeria, saying “We need adequate funding to make the corps more functional’’.
The coordinator explained that the volunteers would soon start mobilising people on how to fight corruption from the grassroots.
Abdullahi said: “We will go in a long way; sensitise people from ministries to ministries, parastatals to parastatals, communities to communities and even markets.”
In his speech, the new local government coordinator for Ilorin East, Alhaji Garba Abdulkadir pledged to take the anti-graft campaign to the nooks and crannies of the council area.
Abdulkadir explained that the corps volunteers would work within the guidelines to expose corruption at the grassroots.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ahmed Babatunde emerged the Assistant Coordinator, Yunus Basambo and Olusegun Immanuel emerged Secretary and Assistant Secretary respectively.
