NAPTIP arraigns woman over alleged maltreatment of a minor

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons on Tuesday arraigned a 38 -year-old woman, Joy Okereafor, in an FCT High Court, Apo, for allegedly maltreating a 14-year-old girl
Okereafor, who works for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Gudu District, FCT is standing trial on two counts of causing emotional and psychological abuse of a minor.
The prosecutor, Grace Iheabeuke, told the court that the defendant committed the offence at the NSCDC quarters in Gudu District, FCT.
The offence, Iheabeuke said, contravened the provisions of Section 2 (1) of the Violent Against Persons [Prohibition] Act, 2015.
After the charges were read to her, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
Justice Valentine Ashi admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000, with one surety in like sum.
He ordered that the surety must be residing with the court’s jurisdiction with a verifiable address.
He also ordered the defendant to get a legal representation before the next adjourned date.
The judge adjourned the case until November 29 for hearing.
