Morocco had asked the Confederation of African Football to postpone the tournament to 2016 or let Morocco host the 2017 tournament or they pull out completely.
After getting a no response from CAF, the Moroccan government on Thursdaymorning decided to withdraw.
The President of the Confederation of African Football, Issa Hayatou, was scheduled to meet the President of the South African Football Association, Danny Jordan, at the ongoing Africa Women’s Championships with the possibility of South Africa chipping in to host the tournament.
South Africa have a history of coming to the rescue of hosting the tournament when there are pressing problems like there are now.
In fact, the country has the facilities and the financial muscle to chip in when required.
The South Africans have so far hosted three Africa Cup of Nations finals in 1996, 2010, and 2013.
The last was when Libya withdrew at the last minute for security reasons.
Egypt are also understood to be interested in hosting the 2015 finals.
Zimbabwe’s Warriors were knocked out of the run for the tournament long back by Tanzania who on their part failed to reach the group stages of the competition after being knocked out by Mozambique.
Zimbabwe, however, cannot chip in to host as 2015 Nations Cup hosts as the country is not ready.
The 2015 Africa Cup of Nations finals as has been the case with previous tournaments was supposed to be held between January and February in 2015.
