The fire department says it is looking for 44 missing people after a high-rise apartment block collapsed in the centre of the Brazilian city of Sao Paolo.
The 24-storey building had been consumed by flames when it suddenly collapsed, engulfing the immediate area in flames and black smoke on Tuesday.
A total of 428 people have been brought to emergency shelters after five nearby buildings were also evacuated, the city’s administration said on Wednesday.
Local media reported that the block, a former federal police building, was being used by squatters.
No victims have been confirmed yet.
Rescue efforts were temporarily stalled on Wednesday because the debris was connected to an electrical current, news portal G1 reported.
