Medical doctor, graduate held for kidnapping, as police shun N5m bribe

Policemen attached to the Inspector General of Police Task Force on terrorism were shocked to discover that one of the suspected kidnappers arrested in Imo State is a medical doctor.
The police team, which arrested about six suspects, among them suspected kidnappers, was equally surprised to find an Economics graduate among the lot.
The suspects, nabbed at their various hideouts were alleged to have killed, maimed and robbed several persons in three geopolitical zones of the country.
It was gathered that the Commander of the IGP’s Task Force, Baba Umar Garba, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, after receiving information from an anonymous source about the suspects’ criminal activities, drafted a team of operatives led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ogwenu Edwin, to Oru Local Government area of Imo State where the Medical Doctor, the Economics graduate, a notorious receiver of stolen goods and three others were arrested.
The medical doctor’s gang was said to have been terrorising residents and visitors of Abia, Anambra, Imo, Lagos and Ogun States in recent time.
The six suspects allegedly confessed to have killed a police Inspector; a community leader; Chief Henry Okafor; a business woman, Lillian Duru, whose Toyota Camry Car was taken away by them.
The Police recovered an AK-47 rifle, a pump action gun, two Jeeps, a Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and five live cartridges from the suspects.
Another police source disclosed that when the team arrested the man who used to buy the snatched cars from the kidnappers, he had promised to give them N5 million, if he was allowed to go and the matter forgotten.
But the team turned down the bribe.
A police officer, who does not want his name in print, said that with the arrest of the suspects, armed banditry in Abia, Imo, Lagos and Ogun States had been reduced as these were the states that the suspects in the past two years had been terrorizing.
