There is imminent breakdown of law and order in Idumuyase community of Issele-Asagba in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The local indigenes and men of the state Police Command are now on a war path over trumped up charges, wanton destruction of properties and illegal detention.
The community, The Eagle Online gathered, became angry after an alleged failed attempt by the police to extort N2 million from a detainee, Comrade Okwudili Maha, and members of the Issele-Asagba Land Committee.
Trouble started when Muanya Okafor and Emeka Jideonwu allegedly orchestrated a petition to the command that Okwudili and some of his relations were involved in illegal land deals.
Police immediately arrested and allegedly detained him for two weeks.
In a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, the community, through its Counsel, Elunor, Eregbuonye and Partners, wondered why the police conspired to wrestle away large expanse of land from his clients by continuing to incarcerate him, despite a court order.
“Even when my client was granted bail by an Issele-Uku High Court after filing an application for the enforcement of his fundamental human rights as enshrined in Sections 34, 35, 36, 37 and 41 of 1999 Constitution, the police acting the script of Messrs. Muanya Okafor, Emeka Jideonwu and their cohorts, continued to incarcerate my client and his relations,” the petition read in part.
According to counsel, the police and the petitioners (Muanya Okafor, Emeka Jideonwu) “conspired among themselves to wrestle away from my clients the control and enjoyment of the aforesaid large expanse of land.”
He said the malicious damage already caused by the police was breeding anger and animosity among the local indigenes and could result in breakdown of law and order.
While he urged the IG to restrain his men from “continued destruction of properties, wounding and inflicting grievous bodily harm on his clients who are members of the community’s land committees,” he said the police should desist from abusing court process and perversion of justice.
