Mediation Committee de-escalates herdsmen/farmers conflict – AFAN

The Hadejia chapter of All Farmers Association has attributed the de-escalation of herdsmen/farmers conflict in the area to the concerted effort of the mediation committee constituted by the state government.
The chairman of the chapter, Alhaji Usman Mohammed, made this assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Hadejia, Jigawa.
He said that members of the committee were drawn from the Police, DSS, AFAN, local government council officials and Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria.
Mohammed said that both MACBAN and AFAN were given one motorcycle each to easily access flashpoints where mediation between herdsmen and farmers was required.
He said: “In the past, we have recorded several cases of violence between farmers and herders, especially in areas like Guri and Kirikasamma. You hardly hear that these days.
“With the aid of the motorcycles attached to our committee, we have mediated in several potentially violent conflict situations involving farmers and herders.
“The truth is both farmers and herdsmen share responsibility for the conflicts.
“We are aware of several cases in which farmers planted their crops on cattle routes and there were situations where by herds invaded farmlands.
“But the most important thing here is the political will and sincerity of purpose shown by the state in ending the conflict.”
The chairman, however, said the problem would only be brought to an end if judges of local courts and the security operatives performed their duties without fear or favour.
He added: “This crisis will only end if judges and the police fear God and avoid the temptation of taking sides with offenders.”
