A 100-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a 20-year-old man in eastern India, who was later arrested, police said on Thursday.
The suspect sexually assaulted the elderly woman at her home in a village in West Bengal state’s Nadia district on Tuesday.
Anup Pal, the police officer investigating the case, said that the woman was sleeping when the accused, who lives in the neighbourhood, entered her room and raped her.
Pal said: “The victim’s granddaughter who heard her cries froze in horror when she went to the room and discovered the old woman in pain and the culprit trying to flee.”
The suspect was arrested by the police on Wednesday following a complaint from the family and was charged with rape.
He said: “The suspect claims he was drunk that night and didn’t realize what he was doing.
“He was produced at a local court which sent him to jail pending the trial.”
According to the domestic media report, the suspect is some three years younger than the centenarian’s great grandson.
This is the latest in the series of brutal incidents of rape and sexual violence reported from India.
In 2017, a 100-year-old woman died after being raped by a drunk man in northern India.
India has been in the spotlight in recent years over incidents of sexual violence against women.
In 2012, the fatal gang rape of a student on a bus in New Delhi led to massive public outcry and tougher laws.
