Nigeria’s duo of Anu Opeyori and Usman Ayo Isiaq have qualified for the quarterfinals at the ongoing Lagos International Badminton Classics Championships at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.
In the men’s singles, Opeyori defeated H. Bello in two sets of 21-17, 21-5, just as Usman upsets tournament seed 5, D. Anjo, by 14-21, 21-10, 21-15 to book their place in the last eight of the tournament.
Opeyori will on Friday slug it out with Indian R. Chittaboina, while his compatriot, Usman, will duel against Ghanian Emmanuel Yaw Donor.
Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports/Chairman Lagos State Sports Commission, Deji Tinubu, stated that the tournament is part of a series of International Sporting events geared towards attracting the best continental and global sports talents to the shores of Nigeria in pursuance of the sports developmental agenda of the State Government.
Tinubu said the Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Sports Commission are working in collaboration with the National Badminton Association of Nigeria to ensure the organization of the tournament is of international standards.
According to the Chairman of the Sports Commission, the Classics is also intended to elevate the level of Sports Competition in the State by giving the State’s athletes the needed competitive edge and exposure.
Tinubu charged the players and supporters to be of good conduct during the tournament and coexist in harmony and share the joy of the games.
