President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday unveiled the new N100 note commemorating Nigeria’s 100 years of attaining nationhood.
The brief event took place shortly before the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting at the Council Chamber, State House, Abuja.
President Jonathan commended the Central Bank of Nigeria for coming up with the commemorative note, recalling that the N50 notes were introduced to mark the nation’s 50th independence anniversary.
Presenting the new N100 note, the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, said it was issued to commemorate the 100 years of the nation’s amalgamation.
According to Emefiele, countries like Morocco, Russia and Costa Rica had issued new currencies to mark epochal events.
The CBN governor assured Nigerians that the new note was produced with the most advanced security features in the world.
Emefiele said the note could boast of features such as security, durability, attractiveness, cultural heritage and transformation.
The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, while lauding the QRC features on the back of the note, also commended the CBN for coming up with the initiative.
The code, if scanned with iPhones or iPads, leads users to a website where the nation’s history could be accessed.
Okonjo-Iweala, was however interested in the cost of printing the new note and whether it will be done locally or abroad.
Responding to that, President Jonathan said relevant questions would be asked when the memo on the printing gets to the Council.
