President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to declare closed on Sunday, the 18th National Sports Festival tagged ‘EKO 2012’ after two weeks of intense sporting competitions.
The games was declared open `by the` Vice `President, Namdi Sambo who represented the president two weeks ago.
The programme will hold at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos starting at five o clock this evening.
Security in and around the Stadium have been beefed to ensure the safety of lives and property. Notable Nigerian musicians are expected to add colour to the ceremony.
Meanwhile, Team Delta has emerged the overall winner of the Festival with 114 gold, 99 Silver and 75 bronze pushing the defending champion, Team Rivers to the second position with 76 gold, 71 silver and 70 bronze.
The host, Team Lagos is in the third position with 64 gold, 47 silver and 71 bronze medals.
Notably, all the 36 States and FCT won medals at the Festival. Cross River is designated to host the next edition in 2014.
Amaju reveals Secret behind Delta State’ success
The Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Pinnick Amaze, has attributed the success of Team Delta to discipline and hardwork.
Amaju stated this on Sunday in Lagos while addressing sports writers. He said the Commission focuses its attention on its strong areas and pray to achieve success.
Amaju noted that the Commission also identified its weak points and built on it especially for the Festival.
He supported the move to open the Festival saying it will ensure sports development in the country. The Chairman restated the commitment of the Delta State Government to promote and give priority attention to sport in other to positively engage the youth.
Amaju also disclosed that most of the state’s athletes were sent abroad for further training which gave them edge over their opponents.
