Alhaji Aliyu Sabiu, the 32-year-old member representing Mani Constituency of Katsina State, on Tuesday emerged Speaker of the state assembly.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Alhaji Abubakar Sulaiman from Rimi Local Government Area nominated Sabiu for the position, seconded by Abduljalal Haruna of Safana Constituency.
Sabiu scored 28 votes to beat his counterpart, Alhaji Haruna Aliyu from Dutsi Constituency, who polled six votes.
Sabiu was later sworn in by the Clerk of the assembly, Alhaji Ahmed Abdullahi.
In his inaugural speech, Sabiu pledged to operate an open door policy in order to remove any forms of suspicion from the assembly.
He said: “I am elected as the youngest Speaker in the history of the state.
“I need your support, cooperation and advices on how to move the house forward and you are free to call me to order when I am about to drift.”
NAN reports that the new Speaker was born in 1983 in Muduru, Mani Local Government Area of the state.
Alhaji Shehu Tafoki of Faskari constituency was also elected as the Deputy Speaker.
Other members of the house were also sworn in.
