Herdsmen attack Delta community, victim in coma

Yet-to-be-identified persons but suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have unleashed terror on Oghonogbo community in Delta State.
Oghonogbo is a boundary community between Edo and Delta States.
Two persons, including one Enudeme, who hails from Obiaruku town in Delta State, were allegedly clubbed to coma.
The victims, The Eagle Online gathered, have been taken to the General Hospital, Obiaruku, in Ukwuani Local Government Area of the state, where they were said to have been revived by medical experts.
Eyewitness recounts that Enudeme had gone into the bush in the neighbouring Oghonogbo, where he came in contact with the herdsmen and without any provocation, the herdsmen allegedly attacked him.
According to sources, the herdsmen used various crude weapons, including dagger and horse whip, to pummel the victim until he became unconscious before they disappeared into the thin air.
While residents in Obiaruku are still confounded as a result of the attack, they are however in quandary over what could have led to the invasion since there was no prior disagreement between them and the herdsmen.
A resident said: “We are still surprised that these people are at it again.
“They have been going about their activities unmolested and nobody was suspecting that they were about to unleash terror.
“Nobody provoked them into this recent attack.”
The incident was said to have been reported at the Obiaruku Divisional Police Station but the authorities there allegedly declined jurisdiction on the ground that Oghonogbo was under the Edo State Police Command.
In the past, herdsmen were said to have invaded one of the communities in the oil-rich state where they allegedly killed 10 persons who were on their way to farm.
They were said to be responsible for the killing of the Head of Personnel Management of Isoko North Local Government Area in Ogume last year.
But there was a lull in the deadly activities of the herdsmen following the intervention of the state government that enjoined the communities and nomadic herdsmen to embrace peaceful co-existence.
However the recent attack might have signalled a resurgence of the inglorious past as the nomads continue to shepherd their animals for grazing.
