The Executive Director of Global Rights, Abi Baiyewu-Teru, has enjoined Ministries such as Environment, Water Resources and other relevant enforcement agencies to partner with the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development to ensure an environmental friendly atmosphere for mining activities in the country.
Baiyewu-Teru stated this at the ongoing three days media immersion programme orgainsed by the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development in conjunction with Open Society Initiative for West Africa in Lokoja.
It is with the theme: “On the Road to shared mining prosperity….Emphasizing Excellence in mining sector.”
Bayeiwu-Teru said it is unfortunate that mining activities have led to needless deaths and suffering of host communities, emphasizing that it is important agencies like the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency and Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee to “step up their game” in ensuring that companies adhered to the rules and regulations and also perform their corporate social responsibilities to the community.
Baiyeru-Teru explained that to avoid communal tension in the community, communities needs to have a say in the issuance of licenses to companies has it is unfair to leave them behind in the scheme of things.
The Executive Director of Global Rights also enjoined the National Environmental Standard and Regulation Enforcement Agency to ensure that the environment is not degraded due to mining activities and also commended the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development for their sterling performance despite their low budgetary allocation.
