FRSC reemphasises date to begin enforcement of use of Speed Limiting Device

The Federal Road Safety Corps on Wednesday said it would on October 1 start to enforce the use of the Speed Limiting Device on commercial vehicles.
Boboye Oyeyemi, the Corps Marshal, made this disclosure at a sensitization forum organised for Transport Union Stakeholders at the NURTW Secretariat in Lokoja, Kogi State.
Oyeyemi, who was represented by an Assistant Corps Marshal, Kehinde Adeleye, said the enforcement on the use of the device was part of the strategy towards ensuring safety on Nigerian roads.
He said that the essence of the programme was to sensitise transport operators on the upcoming enforcement of the requirements for installation of speed limiters in their vehicles.
Oyeyemi said: “We felt it is necessary to further enlighten the commercial transport operators on the need to have the device installed in their vehicles before the enforcement date.
“The basic aim of this initiative is to drastically reduce fatality and mobility rate in traffic crashes on our roads.
“The FRSC, which is saddled with the responsibility of Road Traffic Management, has identified speeding as a major factor in road crashes and the attendant casualties in the country.
“It has been established that more than 50 per cent of fatalities on the roads are caused by excessive speed.
“We have taken these giant strides in collaboration with other stakeholders to raise public consciousness on the relevance of the speed limiters.”
Oyeyemi said the first phase would be focusing on commercial vehicle operators nationwide.
He, therefore, enjoined all transporters to align with the life-saving initiative by ensuring the installation of the speed limiters on their vehicles before the due date to avoid arrest and sanctions.
In his remark, the state Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Jibril Mohammed, lauded the efforts of the commission to ensure safety on the roads.
Mohammed said: “It is an appreciable initiative because it will improve safety and reduce the high rate of crashes on our roads.
“If the initiative is effectively used, it will reduce fatality rate on Nigerian roads to the barest minimum.”
Mohammed urged his members to take advantage of the initiative by ensuring adequate compliance.
The chairman urged the Federal Government to expedite actions on the reconstruction of roads across the country.
