Barely two weeks after he dumped the Peoples Democratic Party for the opposition All Progressives Congress, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has confirmed joining the presidential race.
Tambuwal was reported to have secretly purchased the expression of interest and nomination forms for the presidential contest on Wednesday.
Reacting to media enquiry on Thursday, the Special Adviser to the Speaker on Media and Publicity, Imam Imam, confirmed this.
However, Imam said friends and associates of the Speaker purchased the forms on his behalf.
Replying to through a text message, Imam stated: “Earlier today, some friends and political associates of the Speaker notified him that they have bought the forms for him.”
There had been speculation that the Speaker will join the governorship race in his home state, Sokoto, before the latest development.
It is also being rumoured that Tambuwal could be the much talked about consensus candidate of the APC.
Four others aspirants are in the race for the APC presidential ticket.
They are: a former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari; a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwakwanso; and the Publisher of Leadership Newspapers, Sam Nda-Isaiah.
Tambuwal is expected to formally declare his presidential bid soon.
