The Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in Osun State, Mr. Olusegun Akinwusi has stated that Nigerians should not give opportunity to governors to seek second term in office, saying most of them use such period for personal aggrandizement.
Akinwusi while addressing the 45-member campaign committee set up by state chapter of SDP in Osogbo, on Thursday, explained that four years period was enough for any governor to perform “but the extra-four years are being used for selfish purposes”.
He argued that most of governors lost focus of governance during their second terms in office and many times used such period to serve themselves rather than the people.
“Many of the governors are busy seeking another elective offices, they want to go to National Assembly; some use such time to amaze more wealth and others are busy fighting for political survival after office.
“We hear of their noises in their first term but after securing peoples’ mandate, they become very quiet. Can we hear anything again from Lagos where Governor Raji Fashola is now serving his second term? Can you hear anything from our comrade governor in Edo, Adams Oshimohle as was in his first term in office?
“Many of the governors having problems with President Goodluck Jonathan are second timers and they are bothered more about themselves than the state they govern”, he stated.
The former Head of Service (HOS) explained that he already has his programme sparring just four years period to turn the fortune of Osun state around for good if elected and after this hand over to a new generation of leaders.
“One major thing in our programme is the state economy and we are going to put in place something similar to President Barrack Obama’s ‘Economic Stimulus’ where we will prop up the state economy by granting financial support to people in the state”, he stated.
According to him, parts of his emergency plan to jump-start the economy include financial assistance to farmers, market men and women, civil servants, students, elderly and so on.
The state party Chairman and the Chairman of the Campaign Organization, Mr Ademola Isola and Elder Bibire Abolubode expressed confidence that SDP will put up a tremendous performance if voted to power by the people.
“SDP is on the verge of making history because this party is set to defeat other political parties in the August 9, 2014 polls”, Abolubode stated.
