The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi, has warned motorists to be extra cautious on the highway and obey all traffic rules and regulations at all times.
In a press statement signed by Bisi Kazeem, the Head Media Relations and Strategy of the FRSC, Oyeyemi said this in reaction to the multiple crashes that occurred on the outward bound lane of the of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the wee hours of Wednesday.
The accident occurred on the bridge before Kara Market by OPIC at about 2am.
It involved six vehicles.
Four persons died in the crashes.
As a result of the accident, the whole stretch of the road witnessed a heavy gridlock.
Oyeyemi emphasized that the unfortunate incident has nothing to do with the ongoing construction work on the stretch of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, but due to the negligence of the drivers.
According to him, it took the combined efforts of the FRSC, Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Federal Fire Service and the National Emergency Management Agency about 15 hours to extinguish the inferno that ensued as a result of the crash and to also remove the obstructions and debris before normal traffic was restored.
The Corps Marshal implored motorists to plan their journeys and exercise adequate caution while on the road.
He thanked the agencies that participated and other good Nigerians who assisted in the rescue exercise and removal of obstruction while it lasted, and wished the injured quick recovery.
He equally sympathized with the families of the dead.
