The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State, CP Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, has directed operatives of the command to thoroughly investigate the cause of a fire outbreak at the Obollo-Afor office of the Independent National Electoral Commission on Thursday and ascertain the damages incurred.
Police spokesman in the state, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, said in a statement on Friday that the Udenu Police Divisional Headquarters of the state command received a distress call on Thursday evening about the fire outbreak at the INEC office.
Ndukwe said operatives attached to the division immediately raced to the scene, and together with the Fire Service men in the area promptly put out the fire.
“Preliminary investigation suggests that the fire, which was eventually put out before it could spread to other offices around the building, through the combined efforts of the State Fire Service, the police and law-abiding citizens, may have been caused by power surge due to sudden power supply to the building,” he said.
He said the Commissioner of Police has ordered the area be cordoned off, and a thorough investigation launched to further ascertain the actual cause of the fire and the extent of damage incurred.
