Afro beat king, Femi Kuti, on Sunday got a pleasant surprise at the Encomium White Gig.
His outing at the event would be the first after he was honoured for his 4th Grammy awards nomination on his 2013 masterpiece entitled: No Place For My Dream.
Long before he arrived at the event, the 51-year-old musician, who was accompanied by his sister, Yeni, and friend, Mallam Abdul Okwechime, had no inkling of what awaited him.
Even as his citation was read by the Executive Director of Tell Magazine, Ademola Oyinlola; former Diplomat and master of ceremonies, Femi Segun; as well as popular actor and broadcaster, Yemi Sodimu, Kuti still didn’t know what the event was all about.
The organizers tried in vain to make him keep to the traditional code of the gig.
Instead he chose the most colourful clothes in his wardrobe.
He was, however, quoted to have said that if he had been told, he would have complied with the dress code.
In an emotional tone, Kuti expressed his gratitude to the organizers of the event for the special recognition accorded him.
