Exploitation of student: Delta polytechnic to severely punish erring staff

The management of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, has warned that it will take severe disciplinary action against any staff of the institution found extorting money from the students.
The institution gave the warning in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Manfred Oyibogbeye, and made available to News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Ogwashi-Uku.
The management regretted that despite previous warnings, some unscrupulous staff of the institution had continued to extort money from the students and collect illegal fees from them.
The statement said: “It has come to the notice of management that the acts of extortion and illegal collections by lectures and non-academic staff of the polytechnic have continued unabated despite repeated warnings.
“Management has over the years condemned this ugly development which tends to portray the polytechnic in bad light before the public.”
The management reminded such staff that it was an offence to coerce students to buy textbooks from lecturers or their agents or demand money or any other gratifications from them.
According to the institution’s authority, any lecturer found “selling marks” to students for tests, assignments or examination would be severely sanctioned.
The polytechnic urged the students to report any act of exploitation by any staff to the authority for prompt action.
