Recently I’ve been hearing a lot about a certain sexual problem among couples.
Ironically it’s not just among couples that have been together for long, even new couples are facing this challenge.
The truth is that most couples have at one time or the other had that embarrassing situation where the male partner loses erection in the middle of sex. For the female partner, it can be quite disappointing and for the male, it is quite distressing.
Going soft can be one of the most embarrassing and frustrating things that can happen during sex. It not only kills the mood for both partners, it also leaves one feeling unsatisfied while the other feels shame.
In some cases the female partner feels inadequate, thinking that her partner no longer finds her attractive, hence the reason why he loses erection during sex. It is understandable to feel this way, but it is not necessarily a fact.
This condition is called Erectile dysfunction. It is the inability of a male partner to maintain or keep the erectness of his penis. Research has shown that 322 million men will be affected with this condition by 2025. The good news is that it is fairly common and can be treated
It is important to look at the factors that cause this condition because it will be the determinant for the solution. It is not a one fix for all cases.
Here are some possible factors:
Physical factors are among the most common causes of erectile dysfunction. These can include conditions that affect blood flow such as heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes. Inadequate blood flow to the penis can make it difficult to achieve or maintain an erection. Other physical factors that can contribute to ED include hormonal imbalances, nervous system disorders or injury or damage to the pelvic area.
Some chronic illness have a direct link to ED. In fact, many medical experts deem symptoms of erectile dysfunction to indicate future heart problems in the next three to five years. This is why many doctors urge patients with ED to get screened for heart disease and cardiovascular risks.
Here are some notable associations between ED and common chronic illnesses:
– An estimated 40 percent of men with ED will have hypertension.

– Diabetic men aged 50 and up are twice more likely to have ED than non-diabetics.
– Men with obesity are 50 percent more likely to have ED.
– 42 percent of hyperlipidemia patients have ED.
– 72 percent of men with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia have ED.
If you have these health problems, seek medical help. You’ll need to address the root cause of the disease to manage ED symptoms
Psychological factors can also play a role in erectile dysfunction. Stress, anxiety, depression or other mental health issues can affect a man’s ability to perform sexually. Performance anxiety, in particular, can be a significant factor in causing difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. Relationship problems or unresolved emotional issues may also contribute to ED.
In addition to physical and psychological factors, lifestyle choices can also impact a man’s sexual performance. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption or drug use can all contribute to erectile dysfunction. Lack of exercise, poor diet and obesity may also play a role.
Some men may have feelings of anxiety and fear prior to engaging in sexual activity.
Other factors include:
– Emotionally detachment from the partner.
– Sexual inexperience.
– Self-esteem issues.
– Unrealistic expectations.
People coping with depression are 40 percent more likely to have trouble sustaining an erection than those without depression. Depression and other mental disorders cause a shortage of pleasure hormones in the body (serotonin and dopamine). This makes it hard for the men to feel satisfied during sex. As a result, they fail to achieve a normal erection fit for sexual intercourse.
Medications
Some forms of medication can negatively affect erectile function and sexual arousal. A research review mentioned that 25 percent of ED is a side effect of certain medications.
These medications include:
– Hydrochlorothiazide
– Beta blockers
– SSRIs and antidepressants.
It’s not advisable to stop these medications if they’re causing you problems, instead consult with your doctor to find the right course of action. Typically, they’ll adjust the dosage or prescribe you another form of medication to prevent unwanted side effects.
Excessive drinking
If you have made it a habit to drink before any sexual activity, your body may experience a temporary bout with erectile dysfunction. This is because alcohol impairs inhibitory control, which affects the production and flow of neurotransmitters in the brain. The more you drink, the slower your brain processes and sends out signals to the rest of your body, including the penis. This can make you feel less interested in sexual stimulation. Chronic alcoholics also have it much worse, with one study citing that men with a dependency on alcohol are more likely to have ED.
Possible remedies
Like I mentioned earlier, erectile dysfunction is a treatable condition. It is advisable though to seek medical advice and help. Still here are a few things to do to lessen the symptoms of ED:
– Have an honest discussion with your partner if you are feeling anxious about sex.
– Avoid binge drinking and smoking.
– Adjust your medication after a doctor’s approval.
– Exercise regularly.
– Avoiding unhealthy food and eating a better diet.
– Sleep at least seven hours a night.
There are some clinically-approved treatments that can get to the root of ED and fix it. These include:
– Topical gels and creams.
– Testosterone replacement therapy.
Treating erectile dysfunction may seem difficult, but men have been able to live normal lives after treatment. For some cases, a change in strategy and consistency is all you need to rise above the underlying medical condition that’s interfering with your sex life.
In addition to clinically approved treatments, there are also natural supplements and remedies that may help improve erectile function. Some research suggests that certain herbs and supplements such as ginseng, L-arginine or DHEA may have a positive impact on sexual performance. However, it is important to approach natural remedies with caution and consult with a healthcare provider before using them as some products may have potential side effects or interactions with other medications.
