Bruno Fernandes spared David de Gea’s blushes as he rescued a point for Manchester United after the goalkeeper’s howler gifted Everton the lead in an incident-packed 1-1 draw, with VAR also ruling out a late Dominic Calvert-Lewin winner.
Calvert-Lewin charged down a hesitant De Gea clearance to hand Everton the lead with just three minutes on the clock at Goodison Park, but Fernandes equalised with his third goal in three games on the half hour, equalising with a near-post drive that Jordan Pickford will be disappointed not to have saved.
Gylfi Sigurdsson crashed a free-kick against the post in the second half before a stunning double save from Pickford denied substitute Odion Ighalo the winning goal in stoppage time.
But there was still time for VAR to have the final word as Calvert-Lewin’s deflected shot, deep into time added on, was ruled out by the technology after it ruled Sigurdsson, who was laying prone in an offside position, interfered with play.
The decision prompted boos from the Goodison Park faithful, while manager Carlo Ancelotti was issued a straight red card for his remonstrations with the match officials after Everton were denied the chance to close the gap on fifth-placed United to two points.
