Manchester City moved to the top of the Barclays Premier League table after a comprehensive 5-1 victory over 10-man Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Wednesday evening.
After Sergio Aguero had put them ahead early in the first half, Yaya Toure doubled City’s advantage from the penalty spot immediately after the restart, after Danny Rose was red carded for bringing down Edin Dzeko.
The Bosnian striker made it 3-0 two minutes later after David Silva had hit the post, before substitute Etienne Capoue pulled one back for the hosts just before the hour.
But City’s substitute, Stevan Jovetic, restored the visitors’ three-goal advantage with a deflected strike 12 minutes from time, before Vincent Kompany added a fifth from close range a minute from time.
The visitors looked threatening from the first whistle and served notice of their intentions when Aguero hit the post with a shot from the edge of the penalty area early on.
Christian Eriksen whipped in a dangerous free-kick from the left after Danny Rose had been fouled.
Michael Dawson ghosted in unmarked at the far post to side-foot the ball in off the crossbar, but his effort was harshly ruled out for offside.
City suffered what could prove a major blow to their title aspirations just before the break when Aguero limped off with what looked like a serious hamstring injury.
Any doubts about where the three points were headed were well and truly put to bed within eight minutes of the restart.
First Rose was harshly sent off for bringing down Dzeko when replays showed he got plenty of the ball.
Toure despatched the resultant spot-kick to make it 2-0 before Dzeko got his 17th goal of the season with a clinical finish after Silva’s effort had rebounded off the post.
Capoue pulled one back for the home side just before the hour, smashing home from close range after the City defence had failed to deal with an Eriksen corner, but late strikes from Jovetic, his first in the Premier League, and Kompany completed the rout.
