Ember months: FRSC flags off campaign on road safety in Kano

The Federal Road Safety Corps in Kano State, on Thursday, began the  2018 ember months campaign on safety in the state.
The campaign with the theme: “Safe driving, Save lives” was held at the Yankaba motor park in Kano.
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander, Yusuf Garba, said that at the end of every year, records of increasing vehicular and human traffics were due mainly to festivities.
Garba said that this year ember months were unique as political rallies are expected to begin in a couple of weeks.
He said: “This will no doubt add more pressure on the already fully occupied traffic environment, hence the need to enlighten the public.
“If we change our bad driving habit and do the right thing as we drive on the road, then a safer motoring environment can be guaranteed.”
The commander said the sector had intensified enforcement activities on the highways and township roads and public enlightenment campaigns at the motor parks.
The Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, said the sole aim of the campaign was to ensure that lives and property of citizenry were not wasted to avoidable crashes.
He was represented by the Zonal Commanding Officer, Assistant Corps Marshall, Abayomi Omilaye.
Oyeyemi said it was against this backdrop that the FRSC reinvigorated its effort to avert crashes during the ember months through aggressive public sensitisation campaigns in the media, motor parks among others.
He said: “We really need the support of the government of the state, the sister security agencies, the various transport unions, the media, community and religious leaders, drivers, passengers and of course, all road users.”
He, however, called on drivers to drive safely so that lives and property would be preserved within these periods and beyond.
Declaring the event open, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, said that the state government was committed to support all the activities of the corps in the state.
Ganduje lauded the corps for their efforts in sensitising the public to accomplish the task of reducing road crashes in the state.
