The meeting scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission with political parties to decide when to hold the general election is in progress.
However, barely had the meeting started on Saturday morning when news went viral that the elections had been postponed.
The news was first reported by some foreign media outlets.
Kayode Idowu, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, could not attend to calls by The Eagle Online because he was “in a meeting”.
However, it was gathered that the majority of those who had spoken at the meeting as at press time were in favour of the postponement of the elections initially scheduled for February 14 and 28.
Before the meeting, there were indications that the Presidency had bribed the smaller political parties to support the postponement of the election.
The Peoples Democratic Party-led Presidency is in favour of the postponement of the election.
Sources said the leaders of the smaller political parties who were to attend the meeting had been given $50,000 each to support the postponement of the election.
Only the All Progressives Congress has spoken out openly against the postponement of the election.
However, as at press time, the meeting between INEC and the political parties was still on.
