The ongoing National Conference has accepted the proposal that election petitions for governorship polls should end at the Supreme Court instead of the Court of Appeal.
Also, the Conference has asked the Federal Government to set up election offences tribunal to try electoral offences.
In addition, the Conference accepted the proposal to separate the office of the Attorney General from that of the Minister of Justice
The conference rejected the amendment for the President of the Court of Appeal to be the chairman of the Federal Judicial Service Commission.
Instead, it agreed that a retired justice of the Supreme Court should be appointed at the discretion of the President.
These were sequel to resolutions approved at the presentation and heated debate of the report of the Conference Committee on Law, Judiciary, Human Right and Legal matters chaired by Justice G. A. Oguntade
The debate on the report of the committee took about four hours before the conference began to consider the report of the committee clause by clause.
Over 80 delegates were allowed to contribute to the debate of Oguntade committee’s report before the consideration of the recommendations of the committee.
The Conference rejected an amendment that the Court of Appeal should be established in every state.
