A dismissed traffic warden, Christopher Omeleze, 43, who allegedly demanded a N25,000 bribe from a commercial driver, was on Thursday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.
Omeleze, formerly of the Ikeja Traffic Division of the Lagos State Police Command, is being tried for abuse of office and demanding a bribe.
Omeleze was dismissed by the police authorities over the alleged offence before his arraignment.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Chinalu Uwadione, told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 31 at 9.30am on Oba Akran Avenue, Ikeja.
Uwadione alleged that the accused while on duty demanded the sum of N25,000 from a yet-to-be identified motorist.
He said Omeleze demanded the bribe from the motorist for contravening a traffic law.
The offences contravened Sections 63(1), (a) and (69) (1) , (a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, he added.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Miss A. O. Akinde, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.
The case was adjourned till November 4 for mention.
