Widows, orphans and the elderly have started benefitting from the largesse being spread out by those jostling to succeed the Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, next year.
The vulnerable, including elders at the ‘Old Peoples’ Home’, as well as the motherless babies in the oil rich state, all smiled home with the bounty harvest showered on them by the Chairman of the U & I Development Foundation, Dr. Ngozi Olejeme.
Olejeme, who represents the dynamic face of leadership at the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, was recently endorsed by over 20 chairmen and secretaries of the Association of Registered Political Parties in Delta State to succeed Uduaghan.
The aspirant embarked on a tour round various orphanage homes, prisons and elderly peoples’ homes, to assuage their hunger and water their thirst across the three senatorial districts of the state.
At the Paracletan Hope Home, along Okpanam Road in Asaba, the state capital, Olejeme said she was servicing and maintaining her covenant with God to always be a voice to the voiceless in the society via the gesture.
She vowed not to relent from speaking for innocent children who arrived this world from birth and found themselves in a condition they did not bargain for.
Olejeme, who doubles as the chairman of the Olejeme Children Ambassador Foundation, had adopted 14 children in the centre as ‘Ambassadors’ and placed them under her educational watch and care.
Represented at various orphanages by Barrister Raymous Guannah, Governor Uduaghan’s former Commissioner for Lands and Survey, she requested for a comprehensive list of the needs of the orphanage to enable her do justice to them.
The headmistress of the Orphanage Home, Sister Loretta Elechukwu, represented by Sister Clara Okeleke, said the centre was established as a home for the homeless.
Elechukwu listed the major challenges facing the centre to include vehicles for the movement of the children, generating sets, gas cookers, pampers, chairs, wardrobes, water heaters and a good building.
At the Pro-Laborede Orphange, the team presented items including bags of rice, tubers of yam, milk, Indomie, toiletries, mayonnaise and sugar.
Receiving the item, Nwanbusor Christ, who represented the Chief Coordinator, Sister Stella-Maris Okonkwo, said the Pro-Laborede Orphanage was established 23 years ago, with 50 branches across the world.
Okonkwo said since its establishment, the orphanage had been involved in an holistic work of taking care of the poorest of the poor in the society.
She thanked Olejeme for her humanitarian works across Delta State and the country at large, saying: “Personalities like her make the burden easier for orphanages to bear.”
The old peoples’ home was not left out.
At the elderly peoples home in Asaba, Olejeme, who said their usefulness is in helping society to grow by being custodian of societal values and role model, encouraged them to always play fatherly and elderly roles by advising governments and community leaders in order to have a better society, free from ranchour and acrimony.
The Chairman of the Group, Elder Moses Nwudia, expressed satisfaction with the activities of Dr. Olejeme, lauding her commitment to the warfare of the elderly as a worthy challenge.
Nwudia urged her to keep up the good work.
At the Sapele prison, the inmates were elated at the gifts presented to them, having encouraged them to be hopeful as there is life after their imprisonment.
She also cautioned them against further involvement in criminal activities.
Receiving the food items, the Deputy Controller of the Prison, Airiohuodion Solo, said the impact of Olejeme’s gesture on Nigeria prison system through provision of gift items is worthy of emulation by other Nigerians.
Solo assured her that her intention would be respected.
At Warri prison, Okere, the Deputy Controller of prison, Omaide Emmanuel, thanked the team for the food items, even as he called for more assistance for the 935 inmates as against the 300 inmates the prison was originally designed to accommodate.
Other areas visited included the St Anne’ Ophanage, Redeemer Parish, Enerhen Road, Warri and the Ogwashu-Uku prison.
