Resident of Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, have started returning home afterMonday’s failed attempt by Boko Haram to take over the town.
Members of the dreaded sect had on Monday stormed the town at about 6am, shooting sporadically and detonating explosives.
Owing to this, several residents of the state capital fled through bush paths to neighboring towns and villages.
One of them who travelled by foot to a village over 65km away from Damaturu with his family, told The Eagle Online that he returned on Tuesday morning to find a peaceful town.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said many found it difficult to believe the military could quickly restore peace to the town considering the force with which the Boko Haram sect attacked.
He said: “Kudos must be given to the military for the speed at which they despatched these Boko Haram boys.
“It was like the whole earth was going to sink when the Boko Haram boys stormed the town as the whole place was shaking as they released explosives and were shooting at will as if their armory was not exhaustible.”
It was however gathered that the major concern of residents now is the number of corpses still littering the town.
Though the estimated number of dead was put at 70 on Monday, a source said no fewer than 100 died.
A resident who also just returned to Damaturu, Abba Yusuf, told The Eagle Online: “The greatest fear apart from the Boko Haram boys returning is that of epidemic.
“There are so many corpses littering the town.
“We hope something will be done fast to evacuate the corpses.”
The Yobe State Government has expressed gratitude to the military for the prompt response to the distress call of the residents.
The target of the Boko Haram militants was to overrun the Government House, sources said.
