Senators on Saturday voted against the continuous operation of the joint account between Local and State Governments.
The decision was expressed at the two-day retreat in Lagos of the Senate ad hoc committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution in Lagos.
During deliberating on the matter, 24 lawmakers voted in favour of financial autonomy for local governments, while six lawmakers supported the continuation of the status quo.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the outcome of the retreat will be presented to the Senate for deliberation before further steps can be taken.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, presided at the retreat.
