The caretaker committee set up to run the affairs of the Action Congress of Nigeria in Kwara State is incapable of solving the party’s crises due to deep seated cleavages and conflicting ambitions of its leaders.
This was the position of the Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party in a statement by its Secretary, Prince Yemi Afolayan, in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
According to Afolayan, ACN’s lack of internal democracy and its leaders battle for supremacy ahead of the 2015 election indicate that the party is unlikely to recover from the strife that has torn it apart.
According to him, the fact that the new leadership of the party is headed by someone from outside Kwara State indicates that the ACN in Kwara State is beyond recovery as the committee is out of touch with Kwara politics.
Afolayan said: “In the PDP, we practice politics of consensus but the ACN is known for autocracy under which candidates are anointed by the leadership in Lagos and imposed on state chapters, disregarding their choices.
“This is responsible for the exodus of ACN members to the PDP. So the ACN is doomed.”
Speaking further, Afolayan said the appointment of a caretaker committee headed by an Ondo State man clearly shows that governance will be controlled by forces outside the state if the ACN had wins the gubernatorial election in Kwara State.
