Africa Cup of Nations referee, Rajindraparsad Seechurn, has been banned for six months for his performance in Equatorial Guinea’s controversial 2-1 win over Tunisia in the quarter-finals.
Seechurn, from Mauritius, awarded hosts Equatorial Guinea a penalty in the last minute of the match, which Tunisia were winning 1-0.
Ali Maaloul was harshly judged to have fouled Ivan Bolado in the box and Javier Balboa equalised from the spot.
Equatorial Guinea went on to win the match in extra-time.
Tunisian players and officials angrily confronted Seechurn at the end of the match and their federation was later fined $50,000.
The Confederation of African Football said in a statement: “The referees committee noted the poor performance of the referee,” including an “unacceptable failure to maintain calm and ensure proper control of the players during the match”.
Seechurn has been removed from CAF’s elite referees list but African football’s governing body has also demanded evidence from Tunisia, which supports their claims that the officials were “questionable and biased against Tunisia in general”.
Tunisia football boss, Wadie Jary, resigned from his position in CAF after the game.
