Breaking: Supreme Court affirms Obaseki as Edo State governor

The Supreme Court on Monday affirmed Godwin Obaseki as the validly elected governor of Edo State.
In affirming Obaseki as the governor, the apex court dismissed the appeal filed by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
The court said the appeal by Ize-Iyamu challenging the election of Obaseki, who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, lacked merit.
It however, did not give reasons for its position.
The seven-man panel, led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onneghen, fixed July 24, 2017 to give details of the judgement.
The panel unanimously dismissed the appeal.
Onnoghen stated that the court had gone through the brief earlier, making it easier to arrive at a judgment as quickly as possible.
Ize-Iyamu, who had also lost at the Court of Appeal, took his case to the Supreme Court, citing 21 grounds for the appeal.
He sought to be declared winner of the September 28, 2016 governorship election.
