Jose Mourinho has been confirmed as Manchester United’s new manager.
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss has concluded his talks with United’s Executive Vice-Chairman, Ed Woodward, and agreed a deal to take charge at Old Trafford.
Mourinho, who has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea in December, replaces Louis van Gaal, who was himself dismissed by United two days after they won the FA Cup by beating Crystal Palace 2-1 at Wembley.
The 53-year-old agreed personal terms to take over the reins at Old Trafford on Tuesday but image rights negotiations meant the move was delayed.
The former Chelsea boss’ arrival had been the subject of speculation for months as a result of United’s showings over the course of an underwhelming campaign in the Premier League.
The final nail in the coffin for Van Gaal was his side’s failure in achieving a top-four place to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
It will be Mourinho’s third managerial stint in the Premier League, after two spells at Stamford Bridge with varying degrees of success.
