A former Governor of Bayelsa State and leader of the All Progressives Congress in the state, Timipre Sylva, on Wednesday emerged the candidate of the party for the upcoming governorship election in the state.
Sylva polled 981 votes to defeat his closest rival, Chief Godknows Powell, who scored 39 votes.
Fourteen aspirants participated in the primaries.
This was after a former Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission, Timi Alaibe, withdrew from the race.
The election was conducted by a seven-man team led by Brigadier-General Monsur Dan-Ali (rtd).
Apart from Sylva and Powell, others who partook in the election were Warman Ogoriba,28 votes; Chief Diekivie Ikiogha, 22; Romeo Dikiye, 10; Ebitei, nine; Preye Aganaba, eight; Charity Valedego, seven; Austin Ogoniwo-Febo, seven; and Prince Ebitimi Amgbare, three.
Others were Senator Clever Ikisikpo, three; Christopher Enai, two; Ambassador Felix Oboro, one; Ambassador Emannuel Otiotio, one; Pastor Tonye Aperela, zero; Dr. Imoro Kubor, zero; and George Ombeh, zero.
Twenty-seven votes were voided.
Sylva said after he was declared the winner: “We thank God that our symbol is the broom and we are ready to sweep out poverty, joblessness and under-development from the state.”
Sylva will stand against the incumbent, Hon. Seriake Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party, in the December 5 poll.
