The Sokoto State House of Assembly on Tuesday called for the immediate retirement of the State’s Auditor-General, Alhaji Sambo Nawawi.
This followed the recommendation of the House committee on Public petition, Public Service Matters and Anti-corruption, on a petition filed against the Auditor-General.
The report was presented at the Assembly by the Committee’s Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Garba (APC-Gwadabawa North).
Garba said the petition was presented to the assembly on June 22 by one Mohammed Abubakar.
He said: “That the state Auditor General, who was in service since July 1, 1981 and is due for retirement with effect from June 30, 2016, but up till the time of writing this petition, still in service.
“Subsequent upon accepting the assignment and fully understanding the complex nature of it, which requires lot of careful consultations, the committee vowed to study the petition.
“This is in order to come up with the modalities to be adopted toward achieving the desired goals of the assignment.”
Garba further averred that the committee had met the Auditor-General and other relevant stakeholders on the issue.
The lawmaker said: ‘”The committee observed that the Attorney-General being the chief law officer of the state, had brought an end to the issue by interpreting the relevant constitutional and legal provisions.
“That, the Head of Service shall immediately direct the Acting Chairman of the state Civil Service Commission to issue a retirement notification to the Auditor-General, effective from June 30, 2016.”
The Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Abubakar Magaji (APC-Bodinga North), who presided over the sitting, said the recommendation of the committee was considered and remained part of the report.
