The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone six, Usman Abubakar, says the Police arms mop-up programme was aimed at checking violent crimes.
Abubakar said this on Tuesday in Port Harcourt during a farmiliarisation visit to the Police Command in Rivers.
He said: “The Inspector-General of Police is mopping up illegal arms to ensure that people are not killed.”
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the inspector-general had constituted a Task Force to enforce retrieval, surrender, mop-up and recovery of prohibited firearms from unauthorised persons in the country.
The AIG said innocent persons were being attacked by armed robbers while sleeping, after breaking into their house and dispossessed of their valuables.
Abubakar said: “Many things are happening now.”
According to him, the police numerical strength is decreasing due retirement, death and resignation.
He advised police formations to properly manage what was available.
He said: “Management is all about using the resources available to achieve the set goal.”
Abubakar said due to the current inadequate manpower in the Police Force, duty hours had increased, and warned against negligence of duty.
He appealed to traditional rulers in Rivers to ensure peace in their respective domain.
He commended them for their roles in crime prevention and said more was expected of them.
The AIG urged residents of the state to furnish the police with meaningful information about criminal activities.
He said such information could be given without disclosing the informant’s identity but should describe the location of the criminals and their activities to the police.
