Gideon Dashe of the All Progressives Congress has won Saturday’s Plateau State of House Assembly by-election for Pankshin South Constituency.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the Court of Appeal in Jos had in its judgment on the April 11, 2015 House of Assembly election ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct fresh elections in Nyelleng polling unit of Fier ward in Pankshin North and Pyabor polling unit in Chip ward to determine the winners.
At the end of the polls, Dashe scored 9,985 votes against 9,875 votes scored by Istifanus Mwansat of the Peoples Democratic Party in the keenly contested election.
The by-election at Pyabor polling unit of Chip electoral ward was held amidst tight security, but not devoid of little skirmishes just when the result was to be announced by INEC officials.
It took the combined team of security operatives to control the party loyalists, who disagreed on where the result should be announced.
While some insisted that it has to be taken to the council secretariat to be announced some said it must at the ward level.
It took the declaration by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Godwin Kwanga, before nerves were calmed and the result was announced almost at dawn.
The Returning Officer for Pankshin South, Dr. Chris Vande of University of Jos, declared the result at Longkat in Chip Electoral Ward.
“Pharmacist Gideon Dashe of APC, having scored the highest number of votes and having satisfied the Electoral Law, is hereby return elected,” Vande declared.
NAN reports that with this result, the APC has clinched the two House of Assembly seats in Pankshin Local Government Area.
The lawmakers would represent Pankshin North and South State Constituencies.
