The All Progressives Congress in Niger State has called for the sack of the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Niger State, Dr. Emmanuel Onucheyo, alleging that he is a card carrying member of the Peoples Democratic Party and was romancing the state government.
The Chairman of the APC in Niger State, Engineer Mohammed Jibrin Imam, said on Sunday at the state secretariat of the party in Minna that Onucheyo cannot defend all the allegations levelled against him, especially the funds donated by the Peoples Democratic Party.
According to Imam: “Dr. Onucheyo is dancing to the tune of the PDP government in the state.
“This is because apart from being a card carrying member of the PDP, we believe that it is payback time for the REC for all the patronage he has enjoyed from the present administration in the state since his arrival.
“He has failed woefully.
“He must be transferred or removed to pave way for free and fair election.
“We (APC) and Nigerlites expect the REC to defend himself over allegations levelled against him and not the PDP.
“In fact, with PDP’s reactions, it is even more glaring that they are in a romance and this is not good for our democracy.”
Imam disclosed that the state INEC has no logistic problems and that the earlier date of August 16 should not have been fixed for the bye-election in the state.
He said: “It is now clear that the change in date and other manipulations that is going on is the handwork if the PDP-led government in the state, which is desperate to retain the senatorial seat at all cost.”
The APC is however against the change date for the senatorial bye-election from the unanimously agreed August 16 to August 30, adding that the Electoral Act should not in any way supersede the Nigerian Constitution.
Imam said: “Our great party believes that the reasons for the change in date stated by INEC is a deliberate plan to adequately perfect its arrangement for the rigging of election.
“We will, therefore, take legal actions to resist it.
“Failure by INEC to abide by the earlier date of 16th August 2014 will not only constrain the party (APC) to boycott the election, but the party will drag INEC to court to stop the election.”
