APC challenges Anambra LG poll in court

Senator Chris Ngige says the All Progressives Congress in Anambra State has challenged the 2014 local council election scheduled to hold on January 11 in the state.
Ngige was the party’s candidate in the November 16, 2013 governorship poll won by the All Progressives Grand alliance.
Ngige made this known at the inauguration of 27-member state interim executive committee of the party in Awka on Tuesday.
He said the party decided to institute the case because there were three different types of voters’ register to be used for the poll.
He said the party would not participate in the poll due to the “flawed voter register.”
Ngige added: “Our party has gone to court over the local government election in the state.
“There are three varying voter registers in the state and none of them has been displayed for the poll.
“If organisers of the election like they can go on with the poll, we shall void it in the court.”
Ngige said that other political parties “that were hitherto sitting on the fence” had also decided to back out of the council election.
“They have realised that due to the faulty voter register and other serious matters, they should stay away from the poll,” he said.
The senator criticised Senator Annie Okonkwo, the Interim Deputy National Chairman of the party (South), for claiming in some national dailies that the APC would participate in the council poll.
He said that the 27-member interim executive committee would oversee the affairs of the party in the state for three months.
Meanwhile, the newly inaugurated interim executive committee of the party has suspended Okonkwo and Chuks Chinwuba, the factional chairman of the party in the state, for alleged anti-party activities.
A communiqué issued at the end of the maiden meeting of the committee, said a three-member panel had been constituted to look at the charges against the duo.
The communiqué was read by Chief Amaechi Obidike, the interim chairman of the committee.
Obidike said: “We have found their conduct to be reprehensible and embarrassing and have put the party in contempt, public ridicule and disrepute.
“The anti-party activities have continued with their unguarded and unauthorised utterances about the proposed Anambra local government election.
“Their utterances is sowing a seed of discord and hatred among party members.”
