The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it has not rejected the bid of the All Progressives Congress for registration as a political party.
INEC, in a statement on Monday by Kayode Idowu, the media aide of of the Commission’s Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, said that contrary to report in some newspapers, it has not written to stop the merger that will result in the formation and registration of the APC.
The Action Congress of Nigeria, the All Nigeria Peoples Party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance and the Congress for Progressive Change are in the process of merging to form the APC.
The ACN and the CPC have held their national conventions where it was agreed the parties should be a part of the APC.
But there have been fears that INEC will stop the merger of the parties.
However, Idowu said contrary to reports in some newspapers, INEC had not turned down the registration bid of the APC.
Idowu said: “The Commission has not written to stop the merger bid as APC.
“The Commission, in a letter by its Secretary dated April 23rd, 2013, only declined an application by another association seeking to register as the All Progressives Congress of Nigeria (APCN), for the reason that the acronym proposed by the association is similar to that of another already seeking registration.
“The Commission hereby reassures Nigerians that it will always do the right thing as a dispassionate and impartial regulator of the political process.”
