Young music stars, Patoranking and Davido, led the way with two wins each at ‘The Headies’ music awards which held in Lagos on Sunday night.
Producer and Record label boss, Don Jazzy, also had two wins but one was shared with members of his Mavin Records who featured with him in the song: Dorobucci.
Patorankings awards were ‘Best Reggae Dancehall Artist’ for the song, ‘Girlie O’ and the ‘Next Rated Artist’, which came along with a brand new Hyundai SUV.
Davido won the ‘Song of the Year’ with ‘Aye’ and ‘Artist of the Year’ while Don Jazzy won the ‘Producer of the Year’ with Dorobucci and shared the prize for the ‘Best Pop Single’ with his group, The Mavins.
There were 22 competitive categories of awards plus two ‘Special Recognition Awards’ which went to Sir Victor Uwaifo and P-Square, while Sarkodie of Ghana was also given the ‘African Artist of Year’.
Other winners were 2Face who won ‘Best R ‘n’ B Single’ with the song, ‘Let Somebody Love You’; Phyno won ‘Best Rap Single’ with ‘Parcel, while Oritsefemi won ‘Best Street Hop’ with ‘Double Wahala’.
Timi Dakolo won ‘Best Male Vocal Performance’ with ‘Iyawo Mi’; Niyola won ‘Best Female Vocal Performance’ and Sean Tizzle won ‘Best R ‘n’ B Pop Album’ with ‘The Journey’.
‘Best Rap Album’ went to Olamide for ‘Baddest Guy Ever Liveth’ while ‘Best Collaboration’ was ‘Emergency’ by Wizzypro featuring Skales, Patoranking and Runtown.
‘Revelation of the Year’ was KCee for the album ‘Take Over’; ‘Recording of the Year’ was ‘Ordinary People’ by Cobhams Asuquo, while the ‘Best Alternative Song’ was ‘Bolaji’ by BOJ.
Jesse Jagz won the ‘Lyricist on the Roll’ with the song, ‘God on the Mic’; Reekado Banks was adjudged, ‘Rookie of the Year’, while ‘Best Music Video Director’ went to Clarence Peters for directing Flavour’s, ‘Ada Ada’.
The event, which was billed to start by 6pm, started around 11:30pm and lasted till4:30am.
It included musical performances by Skales, Harrysong, Nikki Laoye, Cynthia Morgan, KCee, Patoranking, Tiwa Savage, Runtown, Wizzypro, Yemi Alade, Runtown, Ice Prince, Dr Sid, Don Jazzy, Davido, Sir Victor Uwaifo and P-Square.
The highlights of the performances were Timi Dakolo’s dramatic sequence with his wife as he performed ‘Iyawo Mi’ and Sir Victor Uwaifo who rolled back the years with his guitar display.
The organisers paid tribute to a quintet of artistes including Kefee, Fatai Rolling Dollar, Goldie, MC Loph and Dagrin who died in recent years.
They also showed their support for the fight against rape with a documentary of the plight of some of the victims in Nigeria.
NAN reports that this was the ninth edition of The Headies which was formerly known as ‘Hip Hop World Awards’.
It is organised annually by Ayo Animashaun of Smooth Promotions who also owns the urber-music channel, Hip TV.
