The Kano State House of Assembly on Wednesday passed into law, the 2018 proposed budget of N5.7 billion for the Kano emirate council.
The passage of the budget followed the presentation of the report of the House Standing Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs by its Chairman, a member APC representing Garko Constituency, Alhaji Abba Garko.
Garko, while presenting the report during the plenary session presided by the speaker, Alhaji Abdullahi Ata, said the proposed budget of N5.7 billion is made up of personnel cost, overhead and capital project.
According to him, the personnel cost was estimated at over N400 million, and overhead cost is over N3.2 billion while that of capital projects was over N2 billion.
He said: “The anticipated revenue is made up of State Contribution and the 44 Local Government’s three per cent contributions, totalling N345. 8 million and N3.5 billion respectively.
“Others are revenue expected to be realised from the sales or lease of plots at Ado Bayero Royal City (Darmanawa), Eid ground (Kofar Mata) and revenues from miscellaneous services.”
The committee chairman added that the three per cent contribution from the 44 Local Government Councils upon which the Emirate council made its projection was reduced by the previous administration unofficially.
Garko said: “Consequently, the council now receive monthly upkeep of N50 million which is not remitted regularly and too inadequate to cater for their various commitments.
“Therefore, given the commitments of the emirate council, the committee recommended for the continued implementation of the three per cent contributions from the 44 Local Government councils.”
The assembly called on the state government to ensure regular remittance of funds meant for the up keep of the emirate council to enable it has adequate funds at all times.
