Alamieyeseigha: US to take appropriate steps against Nigeria

The United States of America has said it would take appropriate steps against Nigeria for the state pardon granted convicted former Bayelsa State Governor, Chief D. S. P. Alamieyeseigha.
Such appropriate steps could involve the cutting off of proposed aids to Nigeria, the United States of America has said.
The spokesperson of the State Department, Victoria Nuland, who stated the position of the United States of America at a press briefing, said the pardon granted Alamieyeseigha was a set back to the anti-corruption crusade of the Nigerian Government, which is being supported by the Government of the United States of America.
Nuland “The United States Government is deeply disappointed over the recent pardons of corrupt officials by the Nigerian government.
“We see this as a setback for the fight against corruption and also for our ability to play the strong role we’ve played in supporting rule of law and legal institution building in Nigeria, which is very important for the future of the country, obviously.”

Asked if the US would consider cutting off aids to Nigeria, Nuland said: “We have made clear to the Nigerians that this puts a question mark on the kinds of work that we’ve been trying to do with them.
“We haven’t yet taken the kinds of steps that you’re suggesting, but we’re continuing to look at what’s appropriate.”
